One of the largest shopping centers TWH/MBI has designed opened for business in Hixson, Tennessee. The almost 500,000 square foot center is anchored by Wal-Mart, but houses much more than just that store. Over the course of several years of planning, discussions with tenants, and with input from our client, we developed a retail street concept which would differentiate this shopping center from others in the Chattanooga market. The materials selected for this “retail street” were important—several different brick colors, awnings, park benches, street lights, and landscaping would be the palate. The scale of the architecture would reflect individual shops rather than long runs of storefront under continuous canopies.
The result is a pleasing and successful combination of brick details and various building treatments which provide an interesting background to the major tenants who are located in this center.
In addition to Wal-Mart, who did modify their design to complement the intent of the development, TWH/MBI developed plans for Office Depot, PetCo, Old Navy, Marshalls, and a number of smaller tenants. The resulting development with great visibility from Highway 153 provides an inviting shopping area either day or night.
