East Brainerd Elementary School is a 154,436-square-foot facility designed to serve up to 1,100 students. Hamilton County Department of Education acquired the original 19-acre site. This site previously housed a small private school made up of prefabricated metal buildings that could not expand to meet growing enrollment.
MBI designed a new, free-standing elementary school while allowing the existing school to remain operational throughout construction. At the same time, MBI phased new parking areas, play fields, and dedicated bus and parent drop-off and pickup zones. They achieved this without demolishing the existing structures, ensuring uninterrupted school operations.
The new school emphasizes energy efficiency and long-term operational savings. Sustainable features include geothermal heating and cooling, a partially reflective roof, daylighting and occupancy sensors. Additionally, multiple clerestory windows bring natural light into the two-story entrance lobby and cafeteria.
Architecturally, the building steps down the site from north to south and organizes circulation along a central spine. This spine functions as the school’s “main street.” Classroom wings extend from this spine to form distinct learning neighborhoods. Clear sightlines from the main entrance to the bus drop-off area enhance visual security. These sightlines allow real-time observation of movement throughout the building.
On April 12, 2020, an EF3 tornado caused significant damage to the school. MBI responded immediately, partnering with The Christman Company, Bennett & Pless, and Campbell & Associates to design and complete all repairs. The team restored the facility within eight months, allowing the school to safely reopen. They continued serving the East Brainerd community.
